More info about ALPHA 2014 – Q&A

People attend Alpha for a wide variety of reasons – some want to investigate whether God exists; others are concerned about what happens after death. Some people have particular questions that they would like to discuss; others want to understand other peoples’ beliefs or would like to explore the purpose of life. Many people have never been to church and others may have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith. Alpha is their open door.

WHO IS THE ALPHA COURSE FOR?

The Alpha course attracts a diverse range of guests, including people of different ages and backgrounds, all with differing viewpoints, and at all different levels of faith.

DO I NEED TO BE A CHRISTIAN TO DO THE COURSE?

No, you don’t need to be a Christian. The course is designed for anyone who is interested in asking questions or learning more about the Christian faith. Many guests have never been to church before.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

There is no charge for attending the Alpha course, although we ask for a $7 contribution towards dinner each week.

ARE MY QUESTIONS TOO CONTROVERSIAL FOR CHURCH?

All questions are welcome on the Alpha course. The course is designed for people to freely ask the tough questions about life and the Christian faith.

DOES THE COURSE EXPLORE OTHER RELIGIONS?

The Alpha course is an exploration of the Christian faith only.

WHAT IF I TRY IT AND DON’T WANT TO COME BACK?

The Alpha course aims to be a low-pressure and non-threatening experience. If you don’t feel that the course is for you, you are under no obligation to return.

The Alpha Story – An Introduction

Alpha is a worldwide phenomenon. It’s found in over 169 countries. It’s run in tens of thousands of schools, prisons, homes and churches of all denominations. It’s given more than 19.6 million people the opportunity to explore the meaning of life. Perhaps it’s just what you’ve been looking for.  Let us introduce Alpha to you.

The Alpha Program at Apex UMC

Alpha® is an 10-week opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the Christian faith to your life today. It is a practical introduction to the basics of Christianity centered around a meal, a talk and small-group discussion. Alpha® is appropriate for seekers, committed Christians, doubters and anyone who wants to take a serious look at the basic tenants of Christianity. Many longtime church-goers have loved the course and benefitted from it, as have those with lots of questions.

Getting excited about the Kids Alpha program at Apex UMC!

What is Kids Alpha?

Kids Alpha is an adaptation of the Alpha course that provides kids an opportunity to explore the meaning of life and their Christian faith along the same topics as that their parents are discussing in the adult Alpha Course.   Kids Alpha is presented in a way that is more appealing to young people.  Kids Alpha are for those children in grades K-5th.  We offer childcare for children who are infant to pre-K.

To participate in childcare you must register your child at nursery@apexumc.org.

What does an Kids Alpha session look like?

Kids Alpha follows the same weekly discussion questions that the adult Alpha program does.  This helps promote family discussions.  However, Kids Alpha do not watch the same videos as adult Alpha.  We start with a topic similar to that of adult Alpha being discussed that week.  This is followed by small group discussions and a craft that is geared towards that week’s topic.  Then we have games, activities, dancing, and additional fun crafts if time allows.

Does Alpha Kids participate in the weekend retreat?

Kids Alpha does not participate with Alpha on their retreat weekend.  It is for adults only.

Can my child attend Alpha Kids without me attending Alpha?

No. Kids Alpha is designed to help families initiate discussions around what they have learned.  An adult must be either be taking the Alpha course or serving as a volunteer in order for a child to participate in Kids Alpha.
